US greens ask President for neonicotinoid suspension

A coalition of US environmentalist and public interest groups has written to President Barack Obama to urge his administration to suspend the use of neonicotinoid insecticides because of their alleged impacts on bees and other non-target organisms.  The groups cite the EU's decision to suspend certain uses of the neonicotinoid insecticides, imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam (Agrow No 665, p 6).  They say that directing the EPA to follow the EU's lead would be a "first step" but even more protective measures are needed, including a "minimum two-year suspension for all outdoor uses of neonicotinoid insecticides pending resolution of their risks".
