Monsanto acquires GrassRoots Biotechnology
Monsanto has acquired the US biotechnology company, GrassRoots Biotechnology (Research Triangle Park, North Carolina) for an undisclosed sum. GrassRoots focuses on gene expression and other agricultural technologies that will complement Monsanto’s biotechnology research and development work, the company says. The two companies agreed a collaboration to develop DNA promoters to control the expression of various input and output traits in a range of crops, including maize, soybeans, cotton and canola, in 2009 (Agrow No 561, p 4). In 2011, they agreed to extend the initial three-year collaboration for a further two years until January 2014 (Agrow No 625, p 7). All research employees will be offered positions within Monsanto. GrassRoots Biotechnology was spun out of the US Duke University in 2007.
