EU considers fipronil ST ban
The European Commission has drawn up proposals to ban seed treatments based on the insecticide, fipronil. Proposed measures have been scheduled for a vote at the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health meeting on July 15th-16th. They follow an assessment issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in May that concluded that fipronil-based maize seed treatments pose a high acute risk to honeybees (Agrow No 665, p 7). The proposal would amend the conditions of the existing approval of fipronil, including “prohibiting the use and sale of seeds treated with plant protection products containing that active substance”.
