Italy to ban MON810 maize planting
Italy is to issue a decree banning the planting of Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant YieldGard Corn Borer (MON810) maize. The decree has been agreed among the Ministries of the Environment, Health and Agricultural Policy, and the prohibition will be in place for up to 18 months. The ban is to be issued following the findings from Italian studies on the "impact on biodiversity from MON810, as well as a European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) opinion on the same from 2011", the Minister of Agricultural Policy, Nunzia De Girolamo, says. The Ministries further cite French precedent (Agrow No 535, p 11), and the granting of Italian government emergency procedures in April.
