BASF condemns EU fipronil restrictions
The EU’s decision to impose a two-year restriction on certain seed treatments based on the insecticide, fipronil, “will not contribute to protecting bees”, says BASF. The company expressed its disagreement after EU member states voted on July 16th to support European Commission proposals. The measures have to be formally adopted and are due to come into force on December 31st 2013. Seeds that have been treated can be sown up until February 28th 2014. The Commission drew up its proposals after the European Food Safety Authority concluded that fipronil-based maize seed treatments pose a high acute risk to honeybees (Agrow No 668, p 7).
