US researchers cautious on RNAi pesticide testing

US government researchers have cautioned that pesticides and genetically modified crops being developed using RNA interference (RNAi) technology may need to undergo different safety evaluation methods from those currently being employed. Jonathon Lundgren and Jian Duan of the USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) suggest that procedures assessing effects on animals' whole life cycles may be needed rather than methods that assess short-term toxicity.
