Illegal agchem seizures up by half in Brazil

Brazilian police and pesticide inspection authorities seized half as many again illegal pesticides in the first of 2013 than in the same period last year. Seizures of contraband and falsified products jumped from 9 tonnes in the first six months of 2012 to 14 tonnes between January and June this year, agrochemical industry trade association, the Sindag, says. Since the association got involved in a national campaign against the trafficking of illegal pesticides in 2001, some 400 tonnes have been recovered by the authorities with over 1,000 arrests.
