EU grants wider food uses for Bayer’s GM rapeseed
Bayer CropScience has gained EU approval for additional food uses of its genetically modified glufosinate-ammonium herbicide-tolerant oilseed rape lines, Ms8 and Rf3, in food. The lines are already approved in the EU for import and standard uses as processed food-grade vegetable oil in food and rapeseed meal in feed. The new approval extends to food and food ingredients containing, consisting of, or produced from the GM crop. As part of its application, Bayer also provided information to cover seeds and pollen in food. The European Food Safety Authority gave a positive assessment in 2012 (Agrow No 650, p 9). EU member states could not reach a majority view on whether to accept or reject the GM lines, leaving the European Commission free to go ahead with its proposed approval.
