Mounting losses in Brazil from earworms

Crop losses due to corn earworms (Helicoverpa armigera) in Brazil largely on cotton and soybean crops amounted to some R$10,000 million ($4,430 million at the current rate) in the last season alone, according to the Bahia state agricultural health defence agency, the Adab, director Amando Sa Nascimento. A state of emergency was declared in the state in April, following which control guidelines were issued and some cotton insecticides approved (Agrow No 660, p 19). The import approval of emamectin benzoate has since been halted by the courts (see this issue).
