Syngenta to expand US biotechnology facility
Syngenta is to undertake a $94 million expansion of its US biotechnology Innovation Center at Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina. Construction is due to start in the fourth quarter of this year, with the first phase due to be completed in 2015 and the final phase in 2016. The new building will connect with Syngenta's Advanced Crop Lab, which opened in May. The 200,000 sq ft (18,600 m) facility will house research focused on traits to improve tolerance to stresses such as drought and improved productivity. In addition to the current focus on maize, soybeans and sugar cane, research will be expanded to support crops such as small-grain cereals and vegetables. Syngenta employs about 400 people at RTP and the number will grow to some 550 with the latest expansion.
