Spanish Bt maize area up by a fifth

Spanish maize farmers continue to increase plantings of the only genetically modified line available to them.  The area planted with Monsanto’s insect-resistant Bt YieldGard Corn Borer (MON810) maize rose by almost 20% this year to over 138,500 ha, according to Spanish media.  The figures come from the Ministry of Agriculture. Spain has long been the dominant adopter of GM maize technology in the EU, planting the majority of the Bt line in the region. It accounted for 90% of the EU Bt maize area last year with a 30% adoption rate, and this year’s area beats that of the entire EU in 2012 (Agrow No 659, p 20).
