Uruguay approves Lecafol bioinsecticide

Uruguay has authorised the sale and use of the bioinsecticide, Lecafol, based on the fungus, Lecanicillium lecanii (previously known as Verticillium lecanii) for the control of whiteflies (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). The product is for use on tomatoes and other horticultural crops. It was co-developed between the Ministry of Agriculture’s agricultural research office, the INIA, and Uruguayan crop protection company Lage (Montevideo). Leacofol is the first biopesticide based on the established active ingredient to be registered in the country. The INIA and Lage signed a development and marketing deal in 2005 to co-produce an L lecanii-based product for use against whiteflies. The INIA intends to develop more biopesticides for sale and use in the country.
