Mexico opens sterile fruit fly factory

The Mexican food quality and health service, the Senasica, has opened a sterile Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) factory in San Luis Potosi this month. The plant is equipped with 60 towers from which should emerge some 45 million flies per week, and has cost some Peso 3.8 million ($300,000). The flies are intended to control the reproduction of the pest on citrus fruit, across an area of 2,500 ha. The region's state of emergency has been downgraded since official controls have been implemented to one of low pest pressure. The aim is to declare the area as a fruit fly free zone.
