EU approval for 1R-trans phenothrin biocide
The European Commission has approved 1R-trans phenothrin as a non-crop insecticide. The active ingredient was assessed as part of the review of existing biocides, where it was originally described as a form of d-phenothrin containing at least 89% of 1R-trans phenothrin. The EU approval only applies to 1R-trans phenothrin, not any other substance complying with the definition of d-phenothrin. The ten-year approval period starts from September 1st 2015 to allow regulators and companies time to adjust to the new conditions. These require EU member states to consider the following when approving products: safe operational procedures for ultra low volume applications, including the use of personal protective equipment; the need to set new or amend maximum residue limits if product use may lead to residues in food or feed; and measures to protect honey bees.
