Corn cob rodenticide gets EU biocide approval
The use of powdered corn cob as a rodenticide has been granted EU biocide approval. In addition to the standard biocide approval, the active ingredient will be added to the list of ais deemed to be "low risk", provided it is only used in the form of pellets in dry locations. The ten-year EU approval commences on February 1st 2015. The European Commission went ahead with its proposed approval despite not receiving majority support from EU member states due to doubts over the ai’s efficacy (Agrow No 658, p 8). The Commission had subsequently submitted its proposal to EU Ministers and the European Parliament, but neither responded within the deadlines required, leaving it free to go ahead with the approval.
