EFSA issues guide on two-year GM food studies

Guiding principles on carrying out two-year trials on rodents fed with novel food and feed, including genetically modified crop/food sources, have been issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).  The length of feeding studies has been a controversial issue in recent years during debates on a revision of EU GMO registration rules. The outcome of the revision, agreed earlier this year, settled on a requirement for 90-day feeding studies (Agrow No 660, p 13). However, there have been many calls for two-year feeding studies, despite the EFSA dismissing the scientific merit of a two-year French study on GM food and rats (Agrow No 655, p 9).
