Danforth’s VIRCA project wins funding boost
The US Donald Danforth Plant Science Center (St Louis, Missouri) has won an $11.9 million funding boost for its work to develop genetically modified viral disease-resistant cassava. Funds will be used to support phase II of the virus-resistant cassava for Africa (VIRCA) humanitarian project to develop and deliver farmer-preferred cassava varieties. The additional funding came from the US Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ($5.6 million), the Monsanto Fund ($5.4 million) and the US Howard Buffett Foundation ($860,000). The project has also received $2.5 million from the US Agency for International Development.
