New EU rules on ais in water in force

EU legislation that extends water pollution controls to seven more pesticide active ingredients has been published and comes into force on September 13th. EU member states have to implement the new rules by September 14th 2015. Final agreement on the changes to the EU water framework Directive (2000/60) was confirmed in July (Agrow No 669, p 12). The herbicides, aclonifen and bifenox, the insecticide, cypermethrin, and the non-crop insecticide/acaricide, dichlorvos, are added as "priority substances", subject to maximum concentration levels in water. The acaricide, dicofol, the insecticide, heptachlor, and the fungicide, quinoxyfen, are added as "priority hazardous substances", subject to stronger measures to stop releases to water. Of the 11 pesticides already under the pollution controls, the herbicide, trifluralin, has been changed to a priority hazardous substance.
