Brazil police break up agchem smuggling ring
Brazilian police have broken up a pesticide smuggling ring in the Rio Grande state, national media report. National and military police launched Operation Harvest earlier this year, leading to raids in five cities in the state. Farmers and distributors have been among those arrested, while a "distribution centre" was uncovered in a rice facility in the south of the state. The operation has led to the seizure of some 1.5 tonnes of pesticides since February. Overall, authorities in Brazil have confiscated 6.6 tonnes of illegal pesticides so far this year, while only 4.2 tonnes were seized in the whole of 2012, reports add.
