UCLA study finds flaws in California pesticide registration

California's approval of the fumigant, methyl iodide (iodomethane), illustrates that the state's pesticide registration process falls short of ensuring that farmworkers, the public and the environment are adequately protected from harmful exposures, according to a new report issued this week by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The report calls for an overhaul of the risk governance approach used by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR), suggesting that the current framework is fundamentally flawed.
