US EPA ordered to consider Gulf of Mexico dead zone

The US EPA must formally determine whether federal rules are needed to limit agricultural run-off and other pollution that are contributing to the massive dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, a federal judge ruled last week. The ruling is a partial victory for a dozen environmental groups who filed suit against the EPA as part of their bid to force the Agency to take action to tackle the nitrogen and phosphorus pollution responsible for the algae growth that causes dead zones in the Gulf and other waters.
