Biocide workload targets set for ECHA

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is expected to deliver 80 opinions on the approval of biocide active ingredients and products in 2014, and to increase this rate to 300 opinions in 2020, says the European Commission. The ECHA took over the handling of biocide approvals, including non-crop pesticides, when the new EU biocidal products Regulation (528/2012) started to be implemented on September 1st. A review of existing biocidal products, including rodenticides, wood preservatives, insecticides and acaricides, is under way and has recently been extended to 2024 (Agrow No 670, p 18).
