Brazil Piaui state to allow emamectin use
The Brazilian state of Piauí's agricultural defence agency, the Adapi, is to allow the use of the banned insecticide, emamectin benzoate, in the state for the control of corn earworms (Helicoverpa armigera). A court confirmed prohibition on its use earlier this year following a request from the public prosecutor's office. That followed national Ministry of Agriculture emergency import and use authorisation of the insecticide from countries where it is registered for use (Agrow No 662, p 22). A state of emergency has been in place in Piauí and neighbouring Bahia since early in the year against earworms, which have devastated cotton and soybean crops. The Adapi is to regulate the insecticide's use under a series of conditions, as well as adopt other control measures.
