USDA urged to reconsider GM alfalfa contamination

Biotechnology critics are turning up the heat on the USDA for its decision not to investigate the discovery of a genetically modified trait in a Washington state farmer's shipment of conventional alfalfa. The USDA declared the incident a "commercial issue", adding that the agriculture industry has approaches to minimise the concern and manage such events (Agrow No 673, p 21). The Department also noted that when a GM crop is deregulated it is no longer subject to USDA oversight.
