US EPA's pesticide programme halted by shutdown

The US EPA has been effectively closed for business by the shutdown of the federal government, leaving pesticide industry stakeholders anxious about delays in product registrations and pending regulatory decisions. Some 94% of the EPA's 16,205 employees have been sent home for the shutdown, including the entire staff of the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) with the exception of its director, Dr Steve Bradbury. The shutdown will have a domino effect on registration decisions and other regulatory actions under way at the OPP, effectively pushing them back by at least the number of days the EPA remains unfunded, according to Dr Ray McCallister, senior director of regulatory policy for CropLife America.
