California rolls out green chemistry rules

California has formally adopted its green chemistry rules, launching a regulatory regime that could lead to new restrictions or bans on specific chemicals used in an array of consumer products, including food packaging, household cleaners and electronics. The program is a bid by California to get away from regulation and legislation aimed at individual chemicals towards a more comprehensive approach that promotes the use of safer substances, but it has been controversial since state officials began crafting it five years ago. The effectiveness of the approach and the road to implementation is far from clear and legal challenges from industry appear likely.
