Australasia OKs imports of Monsanto's GM alfalfa

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) proposes to approve the import of food derived from Monsanto/Forage Genetics International's (FGI) genetically modified KK179 lucerne (alfalfa) with reduced lignin content. KK179 will be combined with Monsanto/FGI's glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready alfalfa through conventional breeding for cultivation in North America. There is no intention to cultivate the crop in Australia or New Zealand. Applications for food and feed approvals have been submitted to authorities in Canada, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. Applications will also be submitted to other countries, including China, which import alfalfa or food and feed products derived from the crop. The FSANZ decision is open to public comment until November 19th.
