Brazilian patent office action to lower agchem prices
The price of many pesticides is likely to drop in Brazil if patent office legal actions succeed. The attorney general of the intellectual property regulatory office, the INPI, has filed 34 cases with the Rio de Janeiro Federal Court seeking to reduce patent protection times for 247 medical and pesticide products by up to six years. The actions result from the INPI's positioning on a complex issue, covering the validity of patents on chemicals for which applications were made between January 1995 and May 1997, the office says. The repercussions for pesticides "will be great", it comments.
