Monsanto sets up website on GM soybean US patent expiry
Monsanto has established a website to provide US growers with information about the expiry of the US patent on its first-generation genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans. The site (www.soybeans.com) outlines the company's commitments to growers and explains the different patents and breeders' rights covering soybean seed, with advice on saving seed. Monsanto has replaced its first-generation soybeans with the higher yielding Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield line, but it has licensed the original technology to other seed companies. Monsanto had previously committed to maintain full global regulatory support for Roundup Ready soybeans until 2021 (Agrow No 596, p 11). It is a signatory to the industry's Generic Event Marketability and Access Agreement (GEMAA) on foreign authorisations and stewardship obligations. Monsanto was the first company to notify the GEMAA of a forthcoming patent expiry, declaring that the Roundup Ready soybean patent would expire in March 2015 (Agrow No 660, p 18).
