New EU biocide committee ready for business
The new Biocidal Products Committee is now ready to handle its first cases related to EU registrations of non-crop pesticides and other biocides, says the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The Committee will prepare opinions on biocide evaluations and approvals, and regulatory matters. It held three meetings in 2013 to establish working procedures for active ingredient approvals, EU-wide product authorisations and mutual recognition of approvals, and has also been set workload targets (Agrow No 673, p 11). The ECHA took over the handling of biocides when the new EU biocidal products Regulation (528/2012) started to be implemented on September 1st. The Committee has agreed that applicants and accredited stakeholder organisations can participate in plenary and working group meetings. It will discuss its first ai and product dossiers at its next meeting in February 2014.
