EFSA dismisses Austrian MON863 ban again
New scientific information provided by Austria in support of its ban on Monsanto's genetically modified corn rootworm-resistant MON863 maize does not raise any new safety concerns, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). There is no need to reconsider the EFSA's previous positive assessment, it says. The Authority evaluated Austria's application in November 2012 to prolong its prohibition on the food and feed use of MON863 for another three years. Austria's ban started in 2008. It was also rejected as scientifically unjustified by the EFSA in 2009 (Agrow No 571, p 14). MON863 gained EU import approval in 2005. Its renewal application is going through the EU registration process, and was given a positive assessment by the EFSA in 2010 (Agrow No 589, p 13).
