EU approval for MON810 maize pollen

The EU approval for Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize has been extended to the plant's pollen or its use in food and food ingredients. The previous approval covered other plant products such as flour and gluten. Monsanto applied in 2012 to extend the EU food-use approval (Agrow No 655, p 8). The application followed an EU court ruling in 2011 that honey containing GM pollen requires authorisation (Agrow No 625, p 23). The Commission had to go ahead with the approval without the full backing of EU member states. They failed to reach a qualified majority agreement on the issue in the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health in June (Agrow No 666, p 6) and in an appeal committee in July.
