Brazil declares earworm emergency for major soy state

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture has issued a one-year state of emergency for the major soybean growing state, Mato Grosso, due to infestation of corn earworms (Helicoverpa spp). It follows a similar declaration from the state of Piaiu last month (Agrow No 676, p 20). Corn earworms caused a reported R$10,000 million (US$4,300 million at the current rate) in losses in last season's cotton and soybean harvests (Agrow No 669, p 19), and infestations have spread in the current planting season.
