EU import approvals for two GM maize lines

The European Commission has granted approval for import, processing and use in food and feed for two genetically modified stacked-trait maize lines. One is the joint Monsanto/Dow AgroSciences SmartStax, which combines Monsanto's Genuity VT Double Pro (MON89034) and YieldGard VT RW (MON88017) with Dow/DuPont’s Herculex I (1507) and Herculex RW (59122). The approval includes four related maize lines combining three traits, and a further four combining two traits. The second EU authorisation is for a maize line combining Monsanto's glyphosate-tolerant NK603 trait with MON89034 and 1507. The Commission went ahead with the approvals after EU member states failed to reach a qualified majority vote for or against its proposals. "No opinion" votes were returned by the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health in June (Agrow No 666, p 6) and a subsequent appeal committee in July.
