Argentine govt group proposes agchem use criteria
An Argentine government-commissioned working group has agreed a set of suggestions and recommendations for the application of pesticides, national media report. They include safety distances when used near urban areas. The agreed document has no force in law, but is aimed at supporting local and provincial authorities that have legislated on the matter, particularly over safety distances. Land-based applications should be carried out at least 100 m and those by air at least 200 m from populations, while the distances may be shorter for land applications whenever a user is in the presence of a professional agronomist, reports note. Several regional legislators have imposed such restrictions in recent years while others mull restrictions (Agrow No 670, p 26). The group was composed of pesticide industry representatives, government agencies, universities and agronomist groups among others.
