Ukraine to adopt GMO production
A Ukrainian government proposal would allow the production and sale of genetically modified maize and soybeans in the country, newswire agprofessional reports. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy has submitted the proposal to the government cabinet with the support of six agricultural associations. The newswire claims the proposal is likely to be adopted and become law by the end of the year. National legislation has prohibited the use of GM seed and products. The Ministry sought to start field trials earlier this year (Agrow No 667, p 8). Ukraine established criteria for risk assessment of the environmental release of GMOs in 2011, viewed as a move towards the initiating field trials (Agrow No 613, p 12).
