Bangladesh cotton board seeks GM cotton
The Bangladeshi Cotton Development Board is seeking import approval of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt cotton. The Board has agreed a deal with Monsanto subsidiary Mahyco to import Bt cotton from India, and seeks similar deals from China. It has requested import approval from the Ministry of Agriculture, from where it would be forwarded to the Ministry of the Environment for final approval for field trials. The Board wants trials to commence by July 2014. Bangladesh recently approved the sale and use of GM insect-resistant Bt brinjals (aubergines), which would be its first cultivated GM crops (Agrow No 676, p 24).
