New Zealand request for whitefly biocontrol
An industry body representing tomato growers has applied to the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority to import and release a biological control agent to combat greenhouse whiteflies (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). Tomatoes New Zealand is seeking to use the predatory mirid, Macrolophus pygmaeus, as part of an IPM programme in commercial tomato greenhouses. The mirid has been used successfully in other countries against the pest, the applicant points out. The application is open to public comment until February 7th 2014.
