Onus on Brazilian growers for presence of GMOs in produce
Brazil has imposed responsibility onto growers to ensure the absence of any adventitious presence of genetically modified organisms in seed batches. The rule change comes in regulations that the Ministry of Agriculture approved in September. Proposals including others within Normative Instruction 41 were under public consultation covering sampling, purity testing and determination of other seeds for eight months. The maximum fine for any infraction within the new rules will be limited to 250% of the market value of the inspected product.
