Empty pesticide packaging pilot launched in Bulgaria
A pilot project for the collection of empty agrochemical packaging has been launched in the Dobrich region of Bulgaria. The programme is expected to collect about four tonnes of triple-rinsed empty pesticide containers from over 40 large farms. The plan is that all farms in the pilot area will be qualified to join the scheme in the next collection campaign in spring and the project will be gradually extended to the whole country. "This initiative is the first step in the direction of implementing a real packaging management system for plant protection product packaging in Bulgaria," says Bulgarian Crop Protection Association director general Nelly Yordanova. The European Crop Protection Association (ECPA) supported four new container management pilots this year in Turkey, Serbia, Russia and Greece. In 2014, it is planning four more pilots in Slovakia, Italy, Cyprus and Lithuania. "The aim is to encourage uptake of best practices in the collection, disposal and recycling of appropriately rinsed pesticide containers … in all European countries," says ECPA director general Jean-Charles Bocquet.
