EFSA explains new GMO application rules

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has updated its guidance on applications for EU approval of genetically modified food and feed. The move reflects a new Regulation (503/2013), which was agreed earlier this year (Agrow No 666, p 6) and sets out mandatory requirements for all applications submitted from December 8th onwards. The Regulation was originally meant to be based on guidelines issued by the EFSA in 2011. However, during its development, EU member states and the European Commission introduced extra requirements that went beyond the EFSA's recommendations. The Authority's latest update reflects these changes. In an editorial in December, the EFSA summarised the key changes, but expressed doubts about the scientific value of some of the new elements.
