EFSA mulls neurotoxicity of acetamiprid and imidacloprid

An analysis by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concludes that the neonicotinoid insecticides, acetamiprid and imidacloprid, may affect the developing human nervous system. It proposes that some exposure levels for the two active ingredients be lowered while further research is carried out to provide more reliable data on developmental neurotoxicity (DNT). Furthermore, the EU should develop a comprehensive testing strategy to evaluate the DNT potential of all ais, and define criteria that would trigger the submission of mandatory DNT studies as part of the pesticide registration process, the EFSA says.
