EFSA reconsiders Herculex RW cultivation

New scientific data on non-target insects has invalidated the previous positive environmental safety assessment of the proposed cultivation of Dow AgroSciences/DuPont’s genetically modified 59122 maize line, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In 2013, the EFSA gave a positive opinion on an application for cultivation, import, processing and food and feed uses in the EU (Agrow No 662, p 8). However, it has since identified data gaps in studies on honeybees and ladybirds. The corn rootworm (Diabrotica spp)-resistant and glufosinate-tolerant maize line, sold as Herculex RW, already holds EU approval for import and processing for food and feed.
