GM poplars yield higher bioethanol

Field trials on genetically modified poplar trees have demonstrated suppression of lignin formation resulting in wood that can be converted into sugars in a more efficient way. These sugars can serve as the starting material for producing bioethanol. The trials are being conducted by Belgian research institute VIB (Ghent) and the French national institute for agricultural research, the INRA, at Zwijnaarde, Belgium.
