Paraguay approves YieldGard VT Pro maize
Paraguay has approved the sale and use of Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant YieldGard VT Pro (MON89034) maize, according to the biotechnology news service, the Agro-Bio. MON89034 carries the Bt Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 toxins for the control of European corn borers (Ostrinia nubilalis), Asian corn borers (O furnacalis), southwest corn borers (Diatraea grandiosella), and sugar cane borers (D saccharalis). The December resolution brings the number of commercially available GM crops in the country to ten, including five for maize, the Agro-Bio notes. Paraguay approved its first four GM maize products in 2012 (Agrow No 651, p 24). They included stacked herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant Genuity VT Triple Pro, which includes MON89034.
