EFSA safety clearance for DuPont soybean imports
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a positive safety assessment for the import and use of DuPont's genetically modified herbicide-tolerant and high oleic acid 305423 soybeans. They include tolerance to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides, which the company has been developing under its Optimum GAT brand. DuPont seed subsidiary DuPont Pioneer originally submitted its application in 2007 for import, processing and use in food and feed, but had to provide more data on several occasions in response to EFSA requests over the following years. The EFSA recommends a post-market monitoring plan to collect consumption data on the food and feed products. Commercialisation of Optimum GAT soybeans was delayed by patent lawsuits, but DuPont reached settlements with BASF in 2010 (Agrow No 584, p2) and Monsanto in 2013 (Agrow No 661, p 2).
