Paraguay OKs Monsanto's Roundup Ready maize 2
Paraguay has approved the sale and use of Monsanto's genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready 2 (NK603) maize, national media report. The December resolution brings the number of commercially available GM maize lines in the country to five. Paraguay approved its first four GM maize products in 2012 (Agrow No 651, p 24). They included Monsanto's VT Triple Pro and MON810, Syngenta's Bt11 and Dow AgroSciences' TC1507. The Ministry of Health blocked the passage of NK603 maize in the registration process from October 2012 following publication of a report in France linking the product to incidence of cancer in rats (Agrow No 649, p 11). That study has since been roundly criticised in peer reviews from several major national and EU regulatory agencies (Agrow passim).
