MEPs support Commission on GM honey

The European Parliament has supported moves to amend EU legislation on honey and reduce the regulatory impact if it contains pollen from genetically modified crops. MEPs voted in favour in January of European Commission proposals to define pollen as a natural constituent of honey, rather than an ingredient. The Commission is responding to an EU court ruling in 2011 that honey containing GM pollen requires authorisation, but it does not agree with the court's interpretation that pollen is an ingredient and thus has to be listed on labels (Agrow No 649, p 10).
