Indian GMO trials committee to meet soon

India's Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) is expected to meet in February to consider field trial applications for genetically modified crops ahead of the coming kharif (summer) season, reports national newspaper The India Express. The GEAC has been dysfunctional for almost two years and has not taken an approval decision since April 2012. After being reconstituted in March 2013 (Agrow No 660, p 23), the Committee met once and cleared some GM crop trials but the Environment Ministry pulled the minutes of the meeting from its website and decided to hold back the clearances.
