Green MEPs claim agchem dominance of seed market
Claims that the European seed market share is becoming concentrated in the hands of a few companies, particularly agrochemical firms, have been made by members of the European Parliament's Greens/European Free Alliance party. They are calling on the European Commission to launch an antitrust investigation of the sector. The move coincides with parliamentary discussions on Commission proposals to revise EU seed legislation. The proposals are proving to be problematic, with MEPs in the Parliament's Agriculture and Environment Committees rejecting them outright.
